HORTICULTURE FOR TOMORROW
Western Australia

Overview of horticultural industry

  • In Western Australia, vegetables are grown in Kununurra, Carnarvon and in the Mid-West from autumn to spring. In summer, the conditions in these areas are too harsh to grow vegetables.
  • In the metro area, vegetables can be grown year round. In inland areas of South-West Australia (Manjimup) cold temperatures and heavy rainfall, apples and stone fruit are grown.
  • A range of horticultural crops are produced in different climates, ranging from the tropical north (around the Kununurra region) to the temperate area in the South West and Geraldton.
  • Some of the largest industry sectors in Western Australia include:
    • Pumpkins
    • Potatoes
    • Rockmelons
    • Beans
    • Peas
    • Pumpkins
    • Apples
    • Stonefruit

Western Australia’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) Regions
Across Australia, 56 NRM regions have been identified. Each state has been broken into a number of regions – in WA there are 6 regions in total.

Each of these regions has a committee (i.e. catchment council or NRM group) whose responsibility it is to co-ordinate natural resource management in each of the six regions.

Key contacts
There are a number of other community groups and organisations in Western Australia that aim to improve natural resource management at the farm, catchment and regional level.

There are also a number of Australian Government facilitators who work at a state level, and have a detailed understanding of NRM policy and programs. The Australian Government facilitators foster activities that fall within the Bushcare, Landcare, Coastcare and Rivercare themes.
