  • In Australia there are 18 000 hectares cultivated to macadamias. These are produced by 945 growers with 40% produced in Queensland.

Queensland Natural Resource Management (NRM) Regions
Across Australia, 56 NRM regions have been identified. Each state has been broken into a number of regions – Queensland has 14 of these regions.

Key contacts
There are a number of other community groups and organisations in Queensland that aim to improve natural resource management at the farm, catchment and regional level.

There are also a number of Australian Government facilitators who work at a state level, and have a detailed understanding of NRM policy and programs. The Australian Government facilitators foster activities that fall within the Bushcare, Landcare, Coastcare and Rivercare themes.

Incentives
A range of incentives are available to primary producers to assist with natural resource management projects such as on-ground works (fencing, revegetation) and implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS).

Project name / organisation? Mareeba-Dimbulah Sustainable Farming Incentives Scheme - Northern Gulf Resource Management Group
What is it?

This incentive scheme is intended to provide grants for the implementation of farm practices that improve profitability and sustainability on farms, reduce soil and nutrient loss, and improve water quality in the Mareeba-Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme area. Grants will be awarded to individual farmers or community/industry groups to help offset the cost of implementing new and innovative best management practices. Grant applications will be assessed on a competitive basis.

How much is available? Applicants will be expected to include in-kind or financial contributions of at least 50% of the overall project costs. Grants will generally be within an upper limit of $10,000 for individual farmers or $20,000 for joint applications or community/industry groups. Larger grants may be considered.
Applications deadline? Deadlines to be advised for 2008.
