HORTICULTURE FOR TOMORROW
N.S.W.
Overview of horticultural industry
  • The major products grown in the horticultural sector include:

    • grapes
    • citrus
    • potatoes
    • tomatoes
    • apples
    • melons
    • lettuces
    • pumpkins
    • carrots
    • onions
  • Vegetable production is one of the most important horticultural industries in Australia, with approximately fifteen per cent of the Australian production grown in NSW, which supplies both the processing and fresh market.
  • The largest concentration of vegetable production in New South Wales is in the south-west and Riverina regions along the Murrumbidgee and Murray valleys.
  • Other regions are smaller, more specialised production districts including the Lachlan and Macquarie valleys in the Central West (sweet corn, brassica, potatoes), the North Coast from Kempsey to Murwillumbah (beans, potatoes, hydroponic lettuce), the South Coast including Cooma (broccoli, lettuce) and Bourke in the North West (melons).
  • Potatoes are the largest vegetable crop in New South Wales. New South Wales grows approximately 12 per cent of the Australian potato crop.
  • New South Wales produces about 32,000 tonnes of onions annually. This figure represents 15 per cent of the total Australian production. About 90 per cent of the state’s onion crop is grown in the Riverina - the region from Griffith and Whitton in the north to Jerilderie in the south.
  • Apples are a major crop in NSW, with most grown in Batlow and Orange. Smaller amounts of apples are grown in the Sydney basin, Forbes and the Northern Tablelands. Pears and Nashi are a minor commercial crop in NSW, grown in similar areas to apples.
  • Citrus is one of most important horticultural industries in NSW with a production area of around 13,000 hectares. The Australian citrus industry is the largest fresh fruit exporter in Australia. NSW produces around 250,000 tonnes of citrus annually representing 40% of Australian production and 36% of citrus exports.

New South Wales Natural Resource Management (NRM) Regions
Across Australia, 56 NRM regions have been identified. Each state has been broken into a number of regions – in NSW there are 14 regions in total.

Each of these regions has a Catchment Management Authority (CMA), whose responsibility it is to co-ordinate natural resource management in each catchment (region).

Key contacts
There are a number of other community groups and organisations in New South Wales and the ACT that aim to improve natural resource management at the farm, catchment and regional level.

There are also a number of Australian Government facilitators who work at a state level, and have a detailed understanding of NRM policy and programs. The Australian Government facilitators foster activities that fall within the Bushcare, Landcare, Coastcare and Rivercare themes.
